Having a dog that is hyperactive can be quite a challenge but what you need to understand is that there is a number of simple techniques you can attempt at home to ease their hyperactivity.
Let’s go over 5 of them:
You could ignore the behavior!
Your dog is asking for your attention and when you give it to them during the time of their “hissy fit” you are not helping. In fact you are re-enforcing their state of mind and body. If you are attempting to stop the behavior, that is obviously the wrong thing to do.
Next time, When you experience the hyperactive jumping, tearing, nipping or whatever it is that your dog is doing, try this,. Ignore them, make no noise, make no eye contact and don’t touch them. The outcome may come as a surprise to you.
Give your dog something to do!
Dogs like doing things. Having tasks. It is their nature. When you give them something that can focus their mind in a healthy way it can turn out that that was all your dog needed. Hyperactivity can be as much a result of the god’s need for mental stimulation as it can be a result of their physical needs. Simply by giving your dog a job do to, you are helping them focus their energy instead of having them spatter it hyperactivity.
Considering that you are in this case giving your dog a job, the process should have a definite beginning and a definite end. Also, this should not be confused or misplaced for actual exercise. It is only a method to remove the hyperactivity.
Take your dog for a walk!
Sometimes your dog will have a lot of built up energy and all they may need is a vigorous walk that will help them rid of the build up. The goal is to have the dog exhaust the excess energy and to feel comfortably tired from it. This will inevitably make them prefer a nap over a hyperactive episode.
Check your own energy levels!
Dogs reflect your own energy back at you. If your energy is off and they are acting up, do be fair to the dog and yourself and observe this and acknowledge it when it happens. How do you feel. Are you calm are you confident are you stressing, burdened and worried, nervous. Which is it? Well, it is likely that your dog senses it and can’t help but experience it themselves. You need to help them by helping yourself.
You can try aromatherapy!
People often omit to remember that dogs’ primary perceptive organ is their nose. They smell the world. This of course makes them prone to being stimulated positively or negatively by smells that surround them.
It is often thought that the smell of lavender helps humans relax. It is no different with dogs. A pleasant and soothing smell will have the same calming effect on the animal. It may be a good idea to talk to you veterinarian to find out which smells are suitable for digs and which dispersal methods to use that will be safe for them and you.
As you can see, these 5 are all pretty simple and easy to try a home. If on the other hand you are experiencing an ongoing issue with your dog and you can’t seem to be able to help them or yourself in stopping the behavior, it is likely that consulting a professional dog trainer would be an advisable way to go.
